Identifying and Referring Suicidal Students

As a student leader, you will encounter troubled students — even some who may be contemplating suicide.

Your awareness, and your ability to take action, can be critical.

In this National Center for Student Leadership presentation, led by Brian Van Brunt, Ed.D., you'll gain insight on issues including:

  • The importance of communication.
  • Signs, clues, and warning signals.
  • The things suicidal people need from you most.
  • What to listen for — both indirect and direct statements.
  • Behaviors, actions, and feelings that should be cause for concern.
  • Environmental and other risk factors.
  • The critical intervention steps you must know.
  • When to get help, and from whom.

The more you know, the better prepared you'll be to make a difference.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the signs and symptoms of suicide.
  2. Learn what information-gathering questions to ask suicidal students and what questions should be avoided.
  3. Learn how to properly intervene and refer students to the appropriate offices for treatment and assistance.
  4. Understand the importance of direct questioning, developing a better knowledge of campus counseling resources, and the risk-factors associated with suicidal students.
