College Students and Mental Illness

As an organizational leader, you'll encounter students with mental health concerns.

Ten percent of all students seek counseling; nearly half are experiencing severe mental illness.

his important presentation, led by Brian Van Brunt, Ed.D., will help you understand:

  • Essential facts about depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, eating disorders, learning disorders, and more.
  • Signs of disorders and how they may appear in organizational settings.
  • Risk factors associated with various illnesses.
  • How you can respond to troubled students.
  • How to improve communication.
  • When to refer students in need, and to whom.

Your understanding — and your help in times of need — can be immeasurably important to students with mental illness.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify key risk-factors: depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, learning disorders, personality disorders, social problems, and eating disorders.
  2. Learn which mental health problems are most common on a college campus.
  3. Understand how to approach students with these difficulties and work toward improving communications with them.
  4. Learn how to properly refer students to the appropriate offices for treatment and assistance.
