Being an Ally to LGBTIQQAA People

Anti- LGBTIQQA bias is all around us, including our own college campuses.

If, as research shows, one out of every ten students is LGBTIQQA, they need allies.

In this National Center for Student Leadership program, Willem Van Roosenbeek discusses the tools to begin this journey.

The seminar includes:

  • LGBTIQQAA terminology
  • Tools to strengthen and shape awareness and knowledge of the issues surrounding LGBTIQQAA people
  • Assessing your own personal beliefs and privileges
  • What an ally is and is not
  • What to do if someone comes out to you
  • The next steps to take action

Everyone deserves a friend, an advocate, an ally.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Articulate the definition and attributes of an ally.
  2. Develop strategies for combating anti- LGBTIQQA language and behavior.
  3. Create a plan of advocacy, action, and support.

Presented by Willem Van Roosenbeek

Willem Van Roosenbeek is an educator, advocate, and change-maker who has been working on social justice issues for over 15 years. He currently is the director of the Pride Center at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, and along with his daily work with students, faculty, and staff, he teaches a section of Understanding Human Differences. Willem has presented on topics related to the LGBTIQQA community, its allies, hate incidents, diversity, social justice, and inclusivity and has shared his personal story as a transgender man. Through his own process of understanding privilege and power to come to terms with his sexual orientation and eventually his gender identity, he will help you begin your journey, look at your privileges, and help you be an ally to all.
